This mild S pattern represents NGC 3310ΓÇÖs radio emission, at a wavelength of 6 centimeters. The emission delineates both the regions where stars form and the distribution of the charged particles known as cosmic rays. Careful study of NGC 3310 radio emission shows that, while cosmic rays are present in the spiral arms, they do not seem to be concentrated in the regions of highest star formation (the red areas in this image). It is possible that the cosmic rays are actually created when gas moves into the spiral arms and encounters sudden resistance. Although a definitive conclusion about the origins of cosmic rays has not been reached, this radio emission image from NGC 3310 will undoubtedly help solve the mystery.
